It all started in early December when a friend and I made an impromptu trip to Key West. It was a blast, and I had so much fun I made the impulse decision to surprise her for a quick trip to the keys.
This is the story...
A Surprise
The best trips are those you don't know are coming... In this case, she was completely blindsided. We had family in town for Christmas that volunteered to babysit a few days, and given that they were last minute plans to begin with, there wasn't any time for the secret to slip.
On Christmas day, she opened all of her presents (can you tell she received a leatherman and Costa sunglasses?). The final present was one of the Cruzan hook bracelets she likes so much, but also in the box was the ticket to Miami and a brochure for Key West.
Check out her face when she realizes what it is.
Adventures
It was a very short trip, just a couple of days, but we were still able to have a lot of fun. We spent time at the southernmost point of the continental USA, sailing, and the Key West Butterfly Conservatory was incredible.
Iguana's Everywhere!
The Keys are absolutely full of these lizards. They're everywhere, and me being me, I had to catch a few of them. They are shy and most won't let you come near them, but they are gorgeous even if they are also invasive.
Takeaways
Even though this was a shorter trip, we still had a great time. I was concerned it wouldn't be worth it. The food, which I didn't take nearly enough pictures of, was one of the highlights. The French breakfast sandwiches with smoked salmon and capers were our favorite. The beer candy bacon at the local Bier Boutique was worth the trip.
Ultimately, we decided a couple days on the Key was enough. On to the next adventure.
